My Work Experience Week at G. Burdett Funeral Services

May 2025  ·  By Fred

When I first considered spending a week on work experience at a funeral directors, I wasn't sure what to expect. It's not the most obvious choice — but it turned out to be one of the most meaningful weeks I've had.

What I discovered very quickly is that this profession requires so much more than I imagined. It demands care, respect and a quiet strength — the ability to hold space for people in some of the most difficult moments of their lives, without drawing attention to yourself.

During the week, Gary and Janice taught me practical skills — including aspects of coffin construction and the care of the deceased. But what struck me more than the practical side was the way they explained the "why" behind everything. Every single procedure, however small, was carried out with intention and respect. And at no point was I pushed beyond what I was comfortable with.

One of the experiences that stayed with me most was accompanying Gary on a very early morning journey to Devon — a four-hour drive — to collect a deceased person and bring them home to their family. It was a long trip, but it showed me the lengths this team will go to in order to support the families they care for. Distance is no barrier.

I also want to mention Annie and Luna — the two dogs at the funeral home. I hadn't expected them, but their calm and gentle presence brought a real warmth to the week. They seem to sense when someone needs a moment of comfort, and I think they do more good than they probably get credit for.

By the end of the week, my view of funeral directing had completely changed. It isn't simply a job — it's a vocation. It takes kindness, patience and thoughtfulness in equal measure. I'm genuinely grateful to Gary and Janice for welcoming me in, for their patience in explaining everything, and for showing me what it truly means to care for people at their hardest time.

I'm now seriously considering pursuing a career in the funeral industry. This week showed me that it's possible to do work that is deeply meaningful — and to do it with real integrity.
